The mission of the accessibility department is to help make the convention experience accessible to attendees who would otherwise have difficulties. We seek to reduce or remove physical, sensory, and social barriers through process improvement and reasonable accommodation.
MCFC is a primarily English convention with signs and event information in English. Please let us know if you need additional language assistance in future events.
At the convention, our primary task will be to implement accommodations based on the present needs of attendees. A help desk for accessibility staff and volunteers to assist attendees will be located in the foyer outside of the ballroom on the fifth floor. This table will be active during the following timeframes:
Thursday: 6pm - 10pm
Friday: 9am - 8pm
Saturday: 9am - 8pm
Sunday: 9am - 5pm
MCFC is now a partnering member with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Corporation. The symbol of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower shares with us the knowledge that attendees may need special care or assistance that wouldn’t be readily apparent otherwise. Visit the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower website to learn more about the symbol:
Our accessibility department will be trained on the hidden Sunflower symbol. If you already have a Sunflower lanyard or wristband, you may bring them to the con to help us identify those in need of accommodations! Extra lanyards will also be available for attendees who need them by request at the accessibility desk.
This is our first year in a new venue as well as our first year having a department dedicated to accessibility. Therefore, we will take thorough steps before, during, and after the convention to achieve equity for all attendees.
A survey is being conducted online prior to the convention to help us ascertain what potential barriers are of concern, which resources will be in greatest demand, and what actions can be taken during the convention to assist attendees. Our staff will use this data to prepare appropriate accommodations suited for each department.
Our department will also review data collected during the convention and attendee feedback from a separate post-con survey to develop formal plans for 2027 with a deepened understanding of the relational contexts of which barriers are rooted in.
We will have an accommodation line for Main Events this year. We hope to allow people in 5-10 minutes before a panel starts so that you can get situated. We aim to have a clearly defined line before each panel, except for any end of night dances.
MCFC has limited resources we can lend out. This year, we have: 1 wheelchair & 1 roller walker. We intend for these to be emergency resources in case of flair up or unforeseen circumstances. Quiet Art Room: This room is a place that is reserved for artists to work on art away from the chaos of the convention. There will only be tables and chairs for artists to bring their supplies and work.
As you may know, by law, service animals are required to be given entry into business spaces. This does not change for us. If you have a trained service animal, we know that it will not be disruptive to the convention experience. Please visit us at the Accessibility table near Main Events to pick up a lanyard or wristband that can be placed around the collar or leash of the animal so that other staff is well aware that this is a service animal.
We hope to ensure a safe MCFC for all people. We ask you to please bring your own masks for this year. We have distributed Automatic Hand Sanitizer Units for each department around con. Please use these to help maintain a safe contact between other people and commonly touched areas!
